Helidoni Beach: A secret beach near Heraklio
You don’t need to travel far or to remote places to find a well-hidden paradise beach in Crete, as the myth goes. You only need to be in Crete herself, and a treasure trove of a beach is bound to be a breath away!
One such hidden delight is Helidoni Beach– the jewel of the north side of Palaiokastro, where sparrows have full reign. If you drive for about 12 minutes from the fringes of the city of Heraklion, you will find it situated near the areas of Rodia and Pantanassa. It’s tucked away under the national road, just out of sight. But you can get there by a flight of beautiful wooden stairs that lead down to the beach.
Once you’re there, you will be stunned by Helidoni’s crystal clear waters. Protected as it is from the winds, Helidoni’s sea is almost always glasslike and serene. The beach has tiny pebbles and sand, and it slopes gently into the sea, inviting you to enjoy your swim. There is a kiosk and a few beach umbrellas and sunbeds to cater to your needs without obstructing the beach’s natural beauty.
If you like adventure rather than serenity, Helidoni still has everything you need- the rock formations on one side make it ideal for snorkeling and underwater photography.
